Choose the question type before choosing the method
Different research questions require different evidence.

Test the evidence before approving the title
Run a small scoping search in the databases appropriate to the topic. For nursing and health research, these may include CINAHL, MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO or Scopus depending on the question.
If thousands of closely related results appear, narrow the population, context, intervention or outcome. If almost nothing appears, check terminology and broaden one element rather than choosing an unanswerable question.
For a review project, the question needs enough evidence to synthesise but not so much that screening becomes unmanageable within the dissertation timetable.
Check feasibility before novelty
A topic can be interesting and still be unsuitable for a student project. Before committing, ask:
- Does the module permit primary research?
- Can ethics or governance be completed in time?
- Can the population or dataset actually be accessed?
- Are the required instruments available and appropriate?
- Is the statistical or qualitative analysis within available skills and supervision?

For literature-based projects, check review type carefully
Not every literature review is a systematic review. A systematic review requires predefined, transparent searching, selection, appraisal and synthesis. A scoping review maps concepts and evidence, while other structured or integrative review formats may be permitted by individual universities.

For quantitative projects, identify variables before software
Define the outcome, predictor or exposure, measurement scale, planned comparison and potential confounders. Then decide which analysis is appropriate.

“Patient experiences of healthcare” is too broad. Specify whose experience, of what process, in which setting and why the answer matters to nursing.
Sampling, data generation, reflexivity and analysis should follow the chosen qualitative methodology rather than treating interviews as a complete methodology by themselves.
Use ethics as a topic-selection test
Topics involving children, mental-health crises, self-harm, trauma, sensitive records or people who may lack capacity can be researched, but they require appropriate safeguards and may not be feasible within every student timetable.

UK and US students may need different project formats
UK programmes commonly use literature-based dissertations, research proposals, quality-improvement projects or service evaluations, with primary research depending on programme rules and governance.
