Start with the brief and proposal type
Proposal formats differ between universities and degree levels. Some require a compact protocol; others expect a substantial literature review, theoretical framework, methodology, ethics section and timetable. Begin with the actual rubric rather than a generic research-proposal template.
Confirm whether the programme permits primary research, secondary-data analysis, systematic or scoping review, quality improvement, service evaluation or another project type. This decision affects the question, methods and governance route.
Turn a broad topic into a researchable question
“Nurse burnout,” “diabetes education” or “mental health stigma” are broad areas rather than research questions. A workable proposal defines the population, issue or intervention, setting and intended outcome or experience.
Frameworks such as PICO, PICo, PEO, SPIDER or PCC can be useful where they clarify the concepts. The framework should fit the question rather than being added simply because it is familiar.
Align the question, aim and objectives
The research question states what the study seeks to answer. The aim describes the overall purpose, and the objectives break that purpose into achievable steps.
These elements should use consistent concepts. A project should not ask an experience question, set an effectiveness aim and then propose a descriptive survey.
Build a rationale from evidence rather than general importance
The background should establish the nursing problem, what is currently known and what remains uncertain. Claims about prevalence, patient outcomes, workforce effects or policy should be supported by credible evidence.
The rationale then explains why this particular project is needed and how it could contribute to nursing practice, education, service delivery, patient experience or scholarship.

No design is automatically more advanced. The strongest proposal is the one that matches the question and can be completed rigorously.
Plan sampling and access honestly
Primary research needs a clear population, eligibility criteria, sampling approach and recruitment route. Do not assume that a placement, workplace or professional role automatically gives permission to recruit participants or use records.
Quantitative sample-size planning should reflect the intended analysis, expected effect or precision, attrition and feasibility. Qualitative sample adequacy should be justified in relation to the question, methodology, sample specificity and analytical depth.
Describe data collection precisely
The reader should understand what will happen, with whom, where, for how long and using which tool or procedure. Depending on the design, this may involve interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, observations, clinical measures, existing datasets or documentary evidence.
If using an existing instrument, check whether it is valid for the population, language and context and whether permissions or licensing apply.
Write the analysis plan before data are collected
The analysis should follow the research question and data type. Qualitative proposals may use thematic, framework, content or another justified analytical approach. Quantitative proposals should identify the descriptive and inferential methods that fit the variables and design.
Do not list statistical tests simply to make the methodology appear sophisticated. If the sample or variables cannot support a planned model, simplify the analysis before the project begins.
Plan ethics and governance before recruitment
Nursing research may involve patients, staff, students, sensitive experiences or confidential records. The proposal should address consent, confidentiality, data minimisation, voluntary participation, distress, safeguarding, power relationships, storage, retention and withdrawal where relevant.
Do not state that ethics or governance approval has been obtained unless it has. Academic proposal support cannot guarantee approval and does not replace the appropriate institutional process.

Approval, recruitment, data collection, analysis, writing and revision occur in sequence. A realistic timetable includes dependencies and some contingency rather than assigning every stage the shortest possible duration.
If approval or participant access cannot realistically occur within the module period, reconsider the design before finalising the proposal.
Plan resources and dissemination proportionately
Potential resource needs include database access, software, transcription, translation, printing, travel, participant materials or specialist advice. Even when a project has no formal budget, acknowledging practical requirements strengthens feasibility.
Dissemination may include the dissertation, presentation, poster, service report or manuscript. Do not promise implementation or publication that lies outside the project’s control.
