Start with alignment
The research problem, question, design, sample or evidence source, data collection and analysis should form one coherent chain. If the question asks about lived experience, a design built only around numerical measurement may not fit. If the aim is to estimate an association, an interview-only design will not answer it.
Methodology quality therefore begins before the chapter is written. Where the research question is still unstable, resolve that first rather than polishing a method that may later change.
Choose the design from the type of knowledge required

Complexity is not a sign of quality by itself. The strongest design is the simplest one that can answer the question rigorously.
Use research philosophy only where it improves the explanation
Some programmes require discussion of positivist, interpretivist, pragmatic or other positions. If so, connect the philosophy to the research question, the role of the researcher, the type of data and the claims the study can make.
A generic paragraph defining several philosophies without showing how they affect the actual project adds little value.
Justify sampling or source selection
Primary studies should explain the target population, eligibility criteria, sampling approach, recruitment route and why the selected participants can provide relevant evidence.
Quantitative sampling may require sample-size or precision reasoning. Qualitative adequacy depends on the question, methodology, sample specificity, depth and analytical strategy rather than one universal number.
Secondary research uses equivalent selection decisions: databases or sources, search strategy, date limits, eligibility criteria and screening processes.
Describe data collection precisely
The reader should understand what will happen, with whom, where, for how long and using which tool or procedure. Interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, observations, clinical measures and document review all require different methodological details.
When using an existing instrument, explain its purpose, scoring and evidence of validity or reliability for the intended population. Do not describe a tool as “validated” simply because it has been published.
Plan analysis at the same level of detail
Software is not the method. Saying that data will be analysed in SPSS or NVivo does not explain the analytical process.
Qualitative methodology should explain how data move from familiarisation or initial coding toward categories, themes or another form of interpretation. Quantitative methodology should connect each objective to variables, descriptive analysis, assumption checks and the selected statistical test or model.

Use design-appropriate quality criteria
Quantitative work may discuss measurement validity, reliability, bias, precision and confounding. Qualitative work may consider credibility, dependability, confirmability, transferability and reflexivity. Review-based work may address search coverage, appraisal, reproducibility and synthesis transparency.
Quality criteria should be connected to actual procedures. Naming “credibility” or “validity” without explaining how it was supported is not enough.
Make reflexivity specific where relevant
Reflexivity is especially important where the researcher’s professional role, assumptions or prior relationships could shape data collection or interpretation. Explain what influence is plausible and how it will be recognised or managed.
Do not claim complete neutrality where the methodology assumes an interpretive researcher role.
Address ethics as part of methodology
Ethics should match the actual risks of the project. Nursing studies may involve vulnerable participants, sensitive experiences, clinical information, workplace hierarchies or possible distress.
The chapter may need to address informed consent, confidentiality, data minimisation, storage, withdrawal, safeguarding, power relationships and the appropriate approval route. Do not state that approval has been received unless it has.

Evaluate feasibility as a methodological issue
A design that cannot recruit participants, access data or complete analysis within the timetable is not defensible simply because it is theoretically appropriate.
Feasibility may require narrowing the population, reducing objectives, using an authorised secondary source or choosing a design that can be completed within the programme constraints.
Methodology alignment audit
Before finalising the chapter, test whether every methodological decision can be traced back to the research question.

If one row cannot be justified, the issue is usually methodological rather than stylistic and should be resolved before polishing the prose.
Explain limitations by their consequence
A limitation section should show how a methodological weakness affects interpretation. A convenience sample may increase selection bias; one-site recruitment may reduce transferability; short follow-up may leave sustainability uncertain; missing data may reduce precision.
Do not list generic limitations that do not apply to the project.

- The design does not answer the question.
