Start with the purpose of the review

A dissertation literature review may establish the background to a primary study, synthesise evidence around a nursing question or justify a proposed intervention or methodology. The purpose should determine which sources are needed and how deeply methods need to be documented.

A broad topic such as “patient safety” is not enough. Define the population, nursing issue, setting and type of evidence needed. PICO, PICo, PEO or SPIDER can help where they clarify the question, but they should not be added mechanically.

Search for evidence that can answer the question

Relevant databases may include CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus or other subject-specific sources depending on the nursing topic and institutional access.

Search concepts should reflect the question and use appropriate synonyms, subject headings and Boolean combinations. Record the database, platform, search date and useful limits where the assignment requires transparency.

Do not select papers only because their titles contain the same keyword. Population, setting, design and relevance to the actual argument matter more.

Build an evidence matrix before drafting

An evidence matrix can record the study aim, country, setting, sample, design, data collection, analysis, main findings, limitations and relevance. This makes comparison easier and reduces repeated reading.

Appraise evidence according to study design

A qualitative interview study, randomised trial and observational survey should not be evaluated using identical criteria. Appraisal should consider the specific sources of bias, credibility or uncertainty relevant to the design.

For example, a qualitative study may require attention to recruitment, reflexivity, data generation and analytical transparency. A trial may require examination of allocation, attrition and outcome measurement. Observational studies may be especially vulnerable to confounding and selection bias.

Do not write that a paper is simply “high quality.” Explain the relevant strength, the important limitation and how that affects the role the source can play in the review.

Synthesise evidence rather than summarising one author at a time

A strong paragraph begins with an analytical point, then brings together several relevant sources, compares them and reaches a proportionate judgement.

A useful structure is:

Claim → supporting evidence → contrasting evidence → methodological explanation → nursing implication.

If three studies suggest that nurse-led education improves understanding but one finds little change, compare intervention intensity, patient population, outcome measurement and follow-up rather than simply listing four findings.

How to integrate several sources in one paragraph

Handle conflicting evidence openly

Disagreement is not a problem to hide. Different findings may arise from setting, sample characteristics, measurement tools, intervention delivery, follow-up or methodological quality.

A review becomes more critical when it explains why evidence differs and what that means for confidence in the final conclusion.

Identify evidence gaps precisely

“There is little research” is rarely enough. A defensible gap identifies what has been studied, what remains uncertain and why resolving that uncertainty matters.

The gap might involve an underrepresented patient group, short follow-up, inconsistent measurement, weak implementation evidence or lack of research in community rather than hospital settings.

Connect the evidence to nursing practice proportionately

A nursing review should make the nursing relevance explicit, but recommendations must remain within the evidence. One small study should not produce a universal practice recommendation.

Professional standards such as the NMC Code can help frame duties around communication, evidence use, safety and accountability. They should not be used as though they prove a clinical intervention is effective.

Structure the chapter around an argument

A common dissertation structure is:

  1. Introduction: define the purpose, scope and review question.
  2. Search or evidence-selection approach: explain how relevant literature was identified where required.
  3. Critical synthesis: organise the evidence around themes, concepts or debates.
  4. Gap and implications: explain what remains uncertain and why it matters.
  5. Chapter conclusion: synthesise the evidence and connect it to the next dissertation stage.

The university template should take priority where one is supplied.
